SUSTAINABILITY AT TRANSYLVANIA 100K

Transylvania 100 exists because of the wild beauty of the Carpathians.

Our responsibility is to protect the mountains that challenge us.

WHAT WE DO

The Carpathians are wild, ancient, and unforgiving. They are also fragile. Protecting these mountains is not a campaign. It is a responsibility.

Every year we work to reduce our footprint and improve the way the event interacts with the Carpathian environment.

Eco-Friendly Trail Marking

The race routes cross fragile alpine terrain, where vegetation and habitats must be carefully protected.

To minimize environmental impact, we apply responsible marking practices:

- Non-invasive trail markers that leave no permanent trace in the landscape
- Eco-friendly signage materials used across all race routes
- Careful placement of markings to avoid damage to sensitive alpine vegetation
- Complete removal of all course infrastructure immediately after the race
- Full trail clean-up operations once the event ends
- Shuttle buses for the 20K race start, reducing individual car traffic and COâ‚‚ emissions

Our objective is simple: the mountain should look the same after the race as it did before the start.

Local Sourcing & Community

Transylvania 100 is deeply rooted in the region that hosts it. Supporting local businesses helps strengthen the community while reducing transport emissions.

Key actions include:

- Over 80% of food and consumables sourced locally from the Bran–BraÈ™ov region
- Direct partnerships with regional producers and suppliers

Through this approach, the event becomes not only a sporting challenge but also a driver of regional development.

Education & Awareness

Operational measures are only part of the solution. Building a responsible trail running culture is just as important.

Transylvania 100 actively educates runners and the community through:

- A dedicated Sustainability & Safety section on the website
- A digital Race Guide explaining environmental and safety measures
- Pre-race educational emails sent to participants
- Social media content focused on: respect for nature, waste management & individual responsibility on the trail

Together, these initiatives encourage a culture of mountain running based on respect, responsibility, and shared stewardship of the Carpathians.

WHAT WE DO
GREEN BIB PROGRAMME
WHAT IS THE GREEN BIB PROGRAMME?

The Green Bib Programme is a sustainability initiative developed together with WWF Romania, designed to give runners a simple way to support the protection of the Carpathian wilderness.

After completing their race registration, participants can choose to renounce the official race T-shirt and redirect its value as a donation to WWF Romania’s conservation projects, helping protect forests, wildlife, and ecosystems in the Carpathian Mountains.

A small choice for the runner. A meaningful contribution for the mountains.

Enter the Green Bib Programme

How It Works

- Register for the race and complete your normal entry.
- After registration, choose the Green Bib option.
- By selecting Green Bib, you renounce the official race T-shirt.
- The value of the T-shirt is donated to WWF Romania, supporting conservation work in the Carpathians.

Each Green Bib means less production, less waste, and more support for protecting the landscapes that define this race.

What Green Bib Runners Receive

Choosing Green Bib means running with purpose.

Participants receive:

- A minimalist Green Bib on race day
- Recognition in the Transylvania 100 Sustainability Impact Report

Because sometimes the strongest statement a runner can make is leaving a lighter footprint in the mountains.

WWF ROMANIA
PARTNERING WITH WWF ROMANIA

Protecting the Carpathian wilderness requires expertise, long-term commitment, and people dedicated to safeguarding nature. That is why Transylvania 100 partners with WWF Romania, one of the country’s leading conservation organizations, working since 2006 to protect wildlife, forests, rivers, and communities across the Carpathians and along the Danube.

Through this partnership, initiatives like the Green Bib Programme help direct runner contributions toward real conservation work: supporting projects that protect some of Europe’s most valuable ecosystems.

WWF Romania’s impact includes:

- 74,000 hectares of virgin and ancient forests protected, recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites
- Support for the protection of over 500,000 hectares of vulnerable forests across Romania
- Programs protecting iconic species including brown bears, European bison, and Danube sturgeons
- Restoration of wetlands and rivers that support biodiversity and reduce flood risks
- Thousands of volunteers mobilized annually through initiatives like Zero Plastic Patrol to fight plastic pollution

Together, we work to ensure that the Carpathian wilderness remains wild for generations of runners to come.

SUPPORT
HOW YOU CAN PROTECT THE WILD CARPATHIANS

The Carpathians give us the trails, the challenge, and the beauty that define Transylvania 100. Protecting them is a shared responsibility, and every runner can make a difference.

Here are simple ways to help keep the mountains wild:

Choose Green Bib

Opt out of the race T-shirt and redirect its value to conservation projects in the Carpathians.

Bring Reusable Gear

Carry your own reusable cup, bottles, or hydration system to reduce single-use waste at aid stations.

Respect Trail Rules

Stay on marked trails, follow race guidelines, and help protect fragile alpine habitats.

Support Local Communities

Choose local products, food, and services during race weekend to strengthen the communities that host us.

Leave No Trace

Carry your waste, respect the landscape, and leave the mountains exactly as you found them.

Because the wild places we run through today should still be wild tomorrow.
