Transylvania 20k

   The Bucegi Mountain range - rising spectacularly from the Prahova Valley in the east, and the Bran Valley in the west - is the stage for the Transylvania 100 races.
   Our maps are produced by the excellent Romanian mapping specialists Muntii Nostri - their detailed and informative maps will be posted on the event page. All runners will be issued with a full-colour race map, along with descriptions of the various permanent trail markings to be followed along the route. In sections traversed at night, luminous markers will be used, along with glowsticks to define the route across open ground.
   A written description of the route will also be provided, plus a GPS download of each route.

   General description:

     The Transylvania 20k race belongs to the category of self-sufficient races, the profile being of medium difficulty, with steep ascents and descents on all types of roads and paths, with an altitude gain of 1230 m and a distance of 22 km. The race, in short, follows the route below:
  Moieciu de Sus, Valea Bangaleasa Barrier, – Grohotis (marked with red cross) – Poiana Gutanu (hunting lodge, marked with red tape) – Poiana Gaura (marked with blue triangle) – Poarta village barrier (marked with red cross, via Saua La Polite) - arrival, Bran Castle - (on Muchia Grajdului, unmarked, clear path)

   Detailed description:

     The 20k race starts from the barrier at the end of Bangaleasa Valley, from Moieciu de Sus and follows the route marked with red cross, on a forest road, 2 km long and then a steep climb through the forest (2.5 km with an altitude gain of approximately 650 m) until it meets the route with the red tape, in the alpine gap, at Grohotis, the highest point of the race - 1760 m. From here, turn left and follow the same route as the 50k race, descending almost continuously through the alpine gap and portions of the forest, on the red band, approximately 3 km, to the hunting lodge in Poiana Gutanu, from where it turns right, on the route marked with blue triangle, where the competitors will refresh their strength, to Poiana Gaura (km 11 of the race). From here, the route follows a gradual descent until the arrival, except for the short climbs to Saua Polite and Muchia Grajdului. Thus, the route will follow the red cross marking through the forest (7 km) and a section of forest road. From here, on the last 4.5 km, to avoid the traffic on Valea Poarta, the race continues, turning left and climbing a forest road from Muchia Grajdului, where you reach the Sports Hall. The last 200 m are parallel to DN 73, the arrival being in the courtyard of the Bran Castle with the entrance to the right through the Bran Customs.

   Difficulties:

  - the first ascent: Valea Bangaleasa Barrier – Grohotis (1760 m alt.) – km 5, with a difference in level of 700 m;
  - the descent of Saua La Polite (1650 m) - the Poarta village barrier (970 m);
  - the long descents that follow the ascents are very difficult for the muscles and joints.

   Checkpoints:

  - Grohotis (km 5) - control;
  - Poiana Gutanu (km 9) - food, fruit, water, energy drinks;
  - Porta (km 16) - water, energy drinks.
